What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient school of medicine. It is over 2000 years old! Over these millennia, it has helped save countless lives. However, its effectiveness is closely linked to its rich history.

Great Ayurvedic teachers of the past discovered many wondrous medicines and treatments. They preserved them in texts as well as through oral traditions. This immense system of knowledge was passed down through generations. Some of these medicines and treatments are closely guarded family secrets. Hence, doctors belonging to old Ayurvedic families have powerful medicines and results.

Our rich legacy

The Kurunhikkattil Ayurveda family carries a unique experience and tradition in Ayurveda. Our medicines and techniques have been around for over three centuries now. As a result of our rich legacy, we are pioneers of Ayurveda.

Dr. Sanal's Kurunhikkattil Ayurveda hospital was founded in the memory of the late Sri. Kunhiraman Vaidyar. He was a master of Ayurvedic treatment. He was also a great humanitarian who took part in India's freedom struggle. His entire life was dedicated to the society. He was often a solace and last resort to many poor and suffering people of that time. Above all, his treatments helped many!

Dr. Sanal Kumar Kurunhikkattil B.A.M.S manages the hospital. He is the son of the late Sri. Kunhiraman Vaidyar. Additionally, he is backed by a team of specialist Ayurveda doctors. As a result, they are making a mark in the field of Ayurveda!

At Kurunhikkattil Ayurveda hospital, we follow the Dravida treatment approach. We use a rich collection of texts, documents and oral traditions of ancient sages. Due to our rich legacy and preserved knowledge, we are certainly one of the best Ayurvedic hospitals in Kerala.

What are the treatments in Ayurveda

The world of Ayurveda revolves around the three Doshas. They are called the Vata, the Pitta and the Kapha. They are present in every human body. Their proportions in the body vary from person to person. But, they are in perfect balance with each other. People get sick when there is an imbalance between the Doshas. That is, when a Dosha's proportion goes high or low, people get sick.

Once you understand this concept, Ayurveda is easier to both accept and digest. You do all that you can to bring the Doshas back into balance. To find out the imbalance and to treat it, we need to understand the concept of qualities.

The twenty qualities

As the heading suggests, there are twenty qualities in Ayurveda. They are called Gunas. The following are those qualities

  • Guru(heavy) X laghu (light in weight)
  • Manda(slow) X tiksna(quick,fast)
  • Hima (cold) X ushna (hot)
  • Snighda (unctuous) X ruksa (dry)
  • Slaksna (smooth) X khara (rough)
  • Sandra (solid) X drava (liquid)
  • Mrdu (soft) X kathina (hard)
  • Sthira (stable) X chala (moving, unstable)
  • Suksma (stable, small) X sthula (big,gross)
  • Vishada (non slimy) X picchila (slimy)

From the above listing, you can make an interesting observation. That is, ten of the qualities oppose the other ten. Now, each Dosha has an associated set of qualities. Imbalance occurs when the Doshas are out of proportion. That is, the proportion of a particular dosha may increase or decrease.
So a typical Ayurvedic treatment follows the following format.

  1. Firstly, Identify the imbalance. Identify which Dosha has an increased or decreased proportion.
  2. If a Dosha has increased proportion, we use diet and lifestyle which has qualities that oppose the Dosha's qualities.
  3. On the other hand, if the Dosha has decreased proportion, we use diet and lifestyle which has qualities that match the Dosha's qualities.

The term Ahara, in Ayurveda, represents diet. Similarly, the term Vihara represents lifestyle.

Branches of Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda has eight branches. They are as follows.

  1. Kaya Chikitsa. It is the branch of General medicine in Ayurveda. It covers a wide variety of diseases, their prevention, diagnoses and cure.
  2. Bala Chikitsa. It is the Paediatrics branch of Ayurveda.
  3. Graha Chikitsa. It is the Ayurvedic form of Psychiatry.
  4. Urdhvanga Chikitsa. It deals with the ailments of ear, nose, throat, eyes, neck and head. That is, it deals with everything from the neck and above.
  5. Shalya Chikitsa. It is the surgical department of Ayurveda. It also deals with removal of foreign objects from the body.
  6. Damshrta Chikitsa. It deals with Toxicology. That is, it involves the study, detection and curing of toxins.
  7. Jara Chikitsa. This branch deals with Geriatrics. Hence, it involves the health and care of old people.
  8. Vrushya Chikitsa. It deals with aphrodisiacs and treatments for sexual vitality and wellness.

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is arguably the most popular term related to Ayurveda. But, What is Panchakarma? The goal of Panchakarma therapies is to eliminate all toxins from the body. 'Pancha' means five. Thus, there are five types of Panchakarma therapies. But before we discuss
about these therapies, we must understand the concept of Poorvakarma.

What is Poorvakarma?

Poorvakarma comprises of procedures that prepare the body for the Panchakarma therapies. It includes procedures like,

  • Pachanadeepana
  • Snehana (Oleation)
  • Svedana (Sudation)

Now let us discus about Panchakarama therapies. They are are as follows.

  1. Vamana. It involves therapeutic vomiting and it eliminates the excess of Kapha Dosha from the body. Vamana brings relief to people suffering from indigestion, asthma, cold, diabetes, lymphatic congestion etc.
  2. Virechana. It is purgation therapy. It eliminates the excess of Pitta from the body. According to Ayurveda, the excess of Pitta can result in rashes, inflammation of skin, frequent fevers etc. Purgation brings relief to people suffering from these conditions.
  3. Basti. It revolves around enema therapy. It helps bring the Vata under control. Vata is predominantly located in the large intestine and bone tissues. Hence, enema therapy is used to correct the Vata imbalances.
  4. Nasya. It involves nasal administration of Ayurvedic medicines. It eliminates toxins located in the areas of head like, sinus, nose and throat. Additionally, Nasya is also effective in treating memory loss, reduced perception of the sensory organs etc. It can also clear up nasal blockages and thereby supercharge your breathing.
  5. Rakta Moksha (Blood letting). It deals with the elimination of toxic blood. An excess of Pitta and toxins in the body can make the blood toxic. Rakta Moksha can bring about relief in people suffering from issues like Leucoderma, Eczema, Herpes etc. It is also a treatment for enlarged liver. Blood letting also boosts up the immune system. Leach therapy is an interesting and popular method of Rakta Moksha.
